In both German and Japanese, the initial content and language focus is on the student's own world (i.e. family, interests, personal surroundings, school), and in later units, the focus moves to broader and more topical themes of interest to teenagers. There is recognition that students will develop their knowledge and competency in language outcomes at different rates and that tasks must cater for mixed ability levels.

Opportunities for extension are also made available for talented students and when possible, year 9 advanced units are offered in each language to provide additional challenge for talented students.

At all levels he program encourages students to develop learning skills and organisational techniques which will enhance their language acquisition and which can be transferred to other learning areas.
