Humanities/SOSE - [Studies of Society and the Environment]
SOSE provides a framework for integrating knowledge, skills and values into a coherent and effective program on which to base both course planning and student learning. The knowledge content provides a balance between acquiring knowledge and developing the intellectual skills of inquiry and critical thinking, and using that knowledge to further develop and communicate understandings.
The SOSE faculty is based on sound knowledge of Australian history and other periods of history; knowledge of local, regional and international physical environments; and the knowledge of the operation of key economic, legal and political institutions. It encourages active investigation and critical questioning of information in a variety of forms: oral, written, visual and electronic.
Learning in SOSE is based on two interrelated sets of activities:
Investigation - This develops students' skills in researching, processing and interpreting data. It is the foundation for analysing events and issues, constructing hypotheses and making informed judgments.
Communication - This develops students' skills in using various forms of communication - spoken, written, graphical, statistical and electronic. Students learn to collect, process, analyse and present information using a range of formats and media.
SOSE subjects are offered across all year levels. In year 7, students study both Geography and History, each for one semester.
In the Middle School vertical structure students can elect semester units, but must attain a minimum of 4 points in each of the strands over three years.
The year 7 to 10 curriculum follows a disciplined-based approach with an integration of CSF guidelines and a content appropriate to suit out school curriculum organisation.
In VCE we offer Accounting, Business Management, Economics, Geography, History and Legal Studies.
